Ascendant is a very important element of Vedic astrology. It governs all the matters and aspects or facets connected with human life. Ascendant or Lagna is a zodiacal sign and degree, which rises on the eastern horizon at the specific time and location of an individual’s birth.
Thus, Ascendant differs in every individual’s horoscope based on specific birth-time and birth-place, present in his/her astrological chart.
The duration of a Lagna or ascendant ( the rising sign) is around two hours. The zodiacal signs are twelve in all and they have to cover around twenty four hours duration of a solar day, thus each sign has to face the Sun for around two hours and this rising sign on eastern horizon or Lagna happens to be the 1st house or ascendant of the horoscope
Ascendant tells about one’s personality, physical appearance, moral character, attributes, wealth, health, strength and career as well. It signifies a person’s consciousness and personality, just like Sun’s first appearance on eastern horizon signifies the dawn of a new day.
It is noticed that every individual has a specific ascendant in his/her horoscope because of the particular place and time of birth; even if two children are born in the same family, their upbringing would be in different conditions and their personalities would differ.
The position of malefic or benefic planets (or their combination) in the ascendant have benefic (favorable) or malefic (unfavourable) effects. The aspect (dristi) of planets on the ascendant also has good or bad effects accordingly.
